Medicare Supplement Plans

A Medicare Supplement Plan also known as a Medigap Plan can provide peace of mind for those seeking high quality health care. Medicare Supplements are meant to fill the “gaps” left by Original Medicare Parts A & B. They are regulated by state and Federal laws and offered through Private Insurance carriers. Some Medigap policies offer coverage for services that Original Medicare do not cover, such as medical care outside of the U.S. In order for a Medigap policy to pay for services it must first be covered by Original Medicare Part A & B.

What you need to know

A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy is different than a Medicare Advantage Plan. Those plans are ways to get Medicare benefits, while a Medigap plan will work together with  your Original Medicare benefits and fill the gaps. Keep in mind that neither Original Medicare or a Medigap plan covers prescription drugs (Part D).

There are 10 different Medicare Supplement options to choose from: A,B,C,D,F,G,K,L,M, and N (Plans E,H,I and J are no longer available).

When can you enroll?

    • If you are within 6 months of your enrollment in Medicare Part B
    • You currently have a Medicare Supplement and you’re within 30 days of your birthday (Birthday Rule in CA)
    • You are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and the company substantially violated a material provision of the contract, discontinued the plan, reduced the benefits or increased the amount of cost sharing.
